Postwar Japan witnessed the appearance of several artistic movements that attempted to make the Japanese aware of its autonomy. Although humanist films dominated in Japanese cinema during the first decade following the country’s defeat, circa the mid-1950s this movement began to lose ground to another form of avant-garde filmmaking, which during the 1960s evolved into Nūberu Bāgu cinema.
